Z'war glanced at Zephan. "It happens. It became a lot rarer during the Ninth Pass when the Weyrs started allowing visitors to observe Hatchings and even rarer still when we started allowing more women to Stand. It used to be that greens were notorious for betweening instead of Impressing, but we know now that that is because a green dragon would, generally, rather Impress a woman than a homosexual man...not that there aren't plenty of male greenriders. By denying the greens female Candidates, we were unfairly limiting their choice."
Then, he turned to Uureian. "There are many people who aren't sensitive enough to Impress, or Impress properly. There's the odd pair where the rider is borderline and the dragon and rider have some difficulties communicating. Rarely, somebody is born who is what we call 'dragon deaf'. These unfortunates cannot sense dragon emotions, even from, say, a gold flight, cannot hear a dragon no matter how hard the dragon tries and cannot Impress at all. In fact, a truly dragon deaf individual can't even Impress a firelizard. For some reason, it seems to be linked to an overall lack of empathy...the few dragon deaf I've met tend to be kinda standoffish types, keep themselves to themselves."

Talo almost flinched upon hearing one girl's response. She knew that response was directed her question. She just knew. Talo eyes narrowed as they stared hard at her desk. Was it wrong of her to ask it? Obviously, her question was common knowledge, so she should have known that. Perhaps she shouldn't have come her? No. If she pondered on the subject any longer her discomfort was sure to have surfaced on her face. Finding her resolve, she sat erect and returned her attention to the dragon rider.
Kathal rested his cheek within his open hand and let out a quiet sigh. His eyes watched as one girl had given her response to the frail boy's question. The girl certainly didn't seem like she was trying to assist. Her voice had a subtle edge of superiority....was it really superiority? Or perhaps the girl was just a know it all. Either way, Kathal wasn't fond of this girl. Women should keep quiet.
Kathal was brought out of his glower from Crabby's tail lightly thumping against his shoulder. Stealing a glance at the lizard, he saw Crabby's head hanging off his other shoulder, lids closed in slumber. The boy let out another sigh. Lucky bastard.

Nebrona felt eyes on her, and she scanned the room to find an older boy with a half-asleep firelizard glowering at her. She let the look wash over her, curiously wondering what she’d done to the boy to receive it. Males could be such sensitive things. As a female guard, it wasn’t the first glare she’d gotten from a male, nor would it be the last- and frankly, she’d been glared at by more intimidating men than him. But what had brought this particular one’s ire?
She listened to the next few questions, which were getting interesting again. The question about unimpressed hatchlings sparked a thought, and she waited until Z’war had finished speaking to ask “Sir, I heard that a good part of Ista’s last clutch never hatched. Do-“ dud eggs sounded insulting to her “do eggs like that appear often, or was that related to the illness?”

Z'war frowned. "In the case of that clutch, it almost certainly was the sickness. One, maybe two dud eggs in a clutch are not all that uncommon, however."
He glanced for a moment at Ack and Sharp. "As in most animals, including humans, nature normally ensures that those with massive deformities don't survive long enough to be born, thus, we generally assume that the majority of dud eggs contained dragons that were not...correct."
He paused. "An examination of the dud eggs from that particular clutch, however, revealed that all but one contained no embryos whatsoever...that is to say, they were probably not fertilized at all...which is extremely rare in dragonkin."
