"Sure, have some food" Jasper said, taking half out and tossing the pouch to the other candidate. "Then tell me you are a dragon healer or someone who really knows the flitts are OK?"
He was pretty sure the other wasn't anything of the sort, but one could hope. The young queen needed to be carefully protected, she was dragonkinds last hope.
The queen flitt was strange too - why would a queen hide? shouldn't she be out showing off and starting to boss her clutchmates already?

See? I told you. Some have already Impressed because you weren’t fast enough. I told you when Kwerth called that you needed to be fast. Ysarith scolded her rider incessantly as she joined the growing crowd of dragons on the beach. D’ya rolled her eyes as she slipped from her green’s neck. And how many firelizards would come to me if I had nothing for them to eat silly green? She inquired acidly, lightly slapping Ysarith on the muzzle as she stepped forward.
D’ya took a look around, partly to keep an eye on the wild clutchmother and partly because she was curious. It looked like about half the clutch had hatched as she spotted two blues, a green, a brown, a gold, and one very odd looking little hatchling that appeared to undecided as to whether he was blue or bronze. Come to think of it the lighter of the blues looked a little odd as well. Was it a side effect of the plague on firelizard clutches perhaps, or maybe just something no one had seen before.
I like the shiny blue D’ya. Could we get one like that? He’s very pretty. Ysarith put in her sixteenth mark worth seemingly quite taken by the metallic blue’s hide. I don’t think there’ll be another one like him. Maybe not ever. D’ya replied thoughtfully, the records showed that it was possible to have sport dragons, so maybe there were sport firelizards too. Oh, that’s a shame, maybe something else shiny then? Ysarith would not let her enthusiasm be dampened in the slightest. We’ll see, I might not even Impress one you know. I haven’t up until now. Because you always show up late.

((Sorry, sorry! I wasn't expecting to be so busy!))
T'nul watched the first three flits hatch and Impress. And then the gold hatched. It was regal-looking...for all of a second.
Ashuith, who had stopped splashing and warbled greeting to the two approaching dolphins (then they swam off), turned to focus on the hatching. Crawling closer in the water, the blue dragon's throat was rumbling very softly, almost inaudibly, like a proto-hatching hum.
She is shiny, the blue said, visibly holding back the urge to bound closer and investigate. The little gold ducked behind the remains of her shell, peeking out warily. T'nul smiled - it was quite cute, but that was something he'd expect of a green or blue. And then the young queen moved furtively across the sand to him, staring endearingly up at him. The familiar warmth of a bonded mind began to seep into him.
He bent down to scoop up the gold flit, who backed away at first, but allowed him. "I'll protect you, little shy one..." he said encouragingly. Ashuith, go turn over some rocks, and trap a few spiderclaws.
Of course, T'nulMine, she is very hungry. Ashuith waded onto the beach and turned over the closest rock with his forelimbs. He encircled the cluster of spiderclaws there with his claws. Quickly, Mine, before they escape!
The shy little gold - "Shy", that was a good name - creeled cautiously, trying to burrow between T'nul's arm and chest as he approached his dragon. "Easy, Shy," he said softly. "It's Ashuith, he is Mine, too." He sent her images of feeding her the spiderclaws, and Shy was, eventually, reassured. He snatched a spiderclaw that had somehow managed to climb atop his dragon's claw, and held it before Shy's nose. Shy stretched out her neck and sniffed it, recoiling as it nearly pinched her. ((ooc: spiderclaws pinch, right?)) But she snapped it up as hunger won out.
Too wary of the little crabs to eat any more, she nestled closely against T'nul's chest. He gave her little eyeridge a scratch, then turned to watch the progress of the hatching.
He couldn't believe his eyes - that blue was so...so...
Shiny! Ashuith completed his rider's thought with much more enthusiasm than was needed, startling Shy, who darted up to T'nul's shoulder and tried to crawl behind his neck to hide in his hair. Clinging with her claws to his shirt, she peeked out from behind his hair, watching as another unusual dragon burst forth and went straight to H'zu. Well, the way the little flit carried...itself, it would be a good match for any bronzerider. But what was it?
Its boldness intimidated Shy, who ducked behind his hair again, completely unaware that her entire back end was clearly visible and she was only hiding her head and forelimbs.
T'nul was worried - was this some aftereffect of the plague? And was it good or bad? Had the dragons and whers been affected, too? ...Had whers even been affected by the plague in the first place? He knew they were related to dragons, but...
Mine, you worry. Why, what is wrong? You have a beautiful shiny new friend, what is there to worry about?
T'nul thought about it for a second, eyes flicking to the other faces standing around the hatching clutch, finally coming to rest on the gold flit that had laid it. Shy peeked at her mother cautiously, since Hers was looking, and then ducked back again.
The clutchmother is not worried. I don't think you should, either, Mine.
T'nul let his mind relax, and, eased by this, Shy crawled onto his shoulder to watch, ready to hide again at a moment's notice. There would be a time for worrying, but a hatching of any sort was a good thing, no matter what.

The eggs were pretty much all shaking now, but only one actually cracked. A lighter green, although there was nothing else unusual about her, was revealed to those gathered.
She tilted her head, regarding her...eggshell. No, no, not good enough. The sapphire drew her attention, but no, she couldn't collect him, not yet. So...let's see.
Maybe what she needed was a partner in crime. The green shook egg goo off of her wings and then scurried towards one of the humans, at random. They had food. Maybe they had shinies too.
She pretty much collided with D'ya, looking up at the greenrider. Yes, this one would do...hopefully as a shinies collector.
Green - Dya Appearance: A few shades on the light side, swirled with even lighter markings across her flanks. She is slightly larger than average for a green, especially her wings. Personality: Ooh! Shiny! Watch this firelizard...her owner will spend much time relieving her of jewelry and other shinythings and returning them to their rightful owner. When it comes to flights, only shiny firelizards will do..she will most likely choose bronze, but might settle for something else...shiny.

Another of the eggs split apart, producing a fairly ordinary green that looked healthy to D’ya’s eyes. The little beast looked around, it was clear she was attracted to shiny objects and for a moment D’ya thought the owner of the pale blue flitter was going to end up with a second pet. However something seemed to change the green’s mind and she scrambled out of her eggshell and almost ran directly into to D’ya’s boot. From there the diminutive green looked up. She was hungry.
D’ya scooped her new pet up out of the way and began breaking up meatrolls for her, mentally thanking whoever had thought up easily transportable food. The green bolted down one roll and most of another before looking around and trying to gnaw on one of D’ya’s buttons. The greenrider rolled her eyes and snorted in amusement. ‘Shiny button hrrrm?’ she asked the little green as she gently pried the firelizard loose from her button. ‘What shall we call you?’ Maybe something about shiny things since she seems to like them a lot. Ysarith suggested, making the effort though she wasn’t a creature of great imagination. ‘Magpie, I think’ D’ya said as her firelizard scramble onto her shoulder and turned curious eyes on her gold sister. The old word for someone who liked sparkly objects seemed a good name for her.

Mandra was cantering a runner down the beach, enjoying herself thoroughly. Seeing the two dragons ahead, she headed a bit toward them, it was always good to use every opportunity to get the runners they used to stock the feeding pens used to dragons. The gelding was an old hand at this and obligingly did as he was told.
When she got close enough to see what was going on, Mandra stopped the gelding, leaving his reins hanging and headed in to the area at a run hoping there was an egg left. She knew a couple people who had flitts, they were gorgeous little friends to have and so useful once they were grown!
“Hi, I’m Mandra, I work at the feeding pens” she managed to get out as she got there. “Are there any eggs left?” She couldn’t help the hopeful tone, but surely they would understand!

Z'war glanced up. "A few. I'm afraid the queen's already Hatched and Impressed."
There might be another bronze in there, he mused. Five eggs left, but it was not the largest of the remainder that hatched next.
It spun three times, and revealed a lighter blue hatchling with dark blue wings. It was actually a very attractive firelizard, and might have been the handsomest had it not had to be put up against the jewel-like sapphire.
Apparently, it knew it, striking a slight pose before it made its way across the beach. Hrm. No, no, no. What was that huge shape over there! As the blue stared at the runner, even if it wasn't all that close, it stepped back again, then sort of crabbed sideways to land on Mandra's foot. Cheep? he said.
Blue - Mandra Appearance: Light blue body, dark blue wings. Exceptionally well proportioned and a very handsome young firelizard. Personality: Curious, he has to stop and look at everything unusual. Ooh! A runner. Ooh! What's that? He'll try to drag his owner to look at it. He's also entirely too aware of his own good looks, and frankly has a bit of an ego.

Despite what her appearance and some of her mannerisms might suggest, Mandra very much appreciated men and males. The trim little blue, so sure of himself and strutting already, had her complete admiration and approval.
"What a handsome fellow you are, little blue" she said kneeling down to greet him. "This has certainly been my lucky day, hasn't it?" Her movements and tones were gentle and easy, the result of a lifetime spent working with and enjoying animals.
The little blue flared his wings a little for her, quite pleased with his choice. She knew how lucky she was, his clever one.
"Flare is it?" Mandra asked, the gentle tone still in her voice. "A good name for you, Blue Flare."
Gently she picked him up to go get her lunch from the saddle bags. He needed the meat there more then she did. She'd make do with the bread and fruit.
