Name: Kimara
Gender: Female
Age: 23
Season: Winter
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Journeyman Vintner
Hair: Dark brown with red highlights
Eyes: Dark brown
Height: 5'8
Weight: 155lbs
Description:
Of average height, Kimara can best be described as 'attractive'. She wears her hair to mid back, it frames features that come close, but not quite, to classical beauty. Her eyes are dark brown, set beneath eyebrows that are slightly heavy for a woman. It is primarily her somewhat large nose that keeps her from being truly beautiful. She has child-bearing hips and average-sized breasts. She tends to walk with her head held high.
Kimara has a lovely voice, and might almost have been worth training as a Harper. It falls between true soprano and mezzo-soprano in range. She almost always wears green.
History:
The youngest of no less than four daughters born to a cotholder near Telgar, one not blessed with sons, Kimara should have grown up to marry and have children.
Intelligent and outgoing, she was considered a promising child. She did well in her lessons, and had a slight bit of the nerd to her. However, she did not aspire beyond the bounds of her class and gender...
...until, when she was twelve years old, she was wandering a Gather at the main hold alone. She seldom got to such, but her father had two runner colts he wanted to sell. Her mother gave her a quarter mark and told her to enjoy herself, so she was. She got into a conversation with the Master Vintner running one of the stalls...and was there so late her mother had to come looking for her.
"If this child was a boy, I'd take him as an apprentice."
Kimara just took that as a compliment. She was surprised by her mother's response, "Why not take her anyway?"
Kimara might not have been ambitious, but her mother saw an opportunity for a good life for her. The two adults argued, and eventually the Vintner was convinced.
Rapidly, the girl realized her new life would not be easy. The Winecraft had a glass ceiling as solid as its bottles. To do well, she had to not just be as good as the boys. She had to be better.
Better she was, walking the tables at seventeen. She was assigned to Crom Hold, where she met the Harper journeyman who manned the drums. They were married six months later. Within a year of her marriage, Kimarra found herself with a child. A son, they named Tamarron. Four years of true happiness ensued.
She was determined to prove that a married woman could be a Master in a Craft. And while her failure to conceive again was in some ways a disappointment, Tamarron did not lack for playmates, even befriending the Lord Holder's youngest son.
The dragon plague was a distant worry for her. Pern would survive, by finding new ways if necessary.
Then, six months ago, Talion, her husband, fell from the drumheights to his death. At least, that was what was said.
Kimarra did not believe it. She set out to find the truth, and, with the help of the watchrider, found it...the truth that shattered everything.
Talion had been having an affair. His mistress had killed him after he broke it off. It did not break her. She was determined not to let him win.
But she did request that the Winecraft Hall reassign her to 'Somewhere very different from Crom'.
The Winecraft knew Ista Weyr needed a journeyman to maintain its cellars and assist the Headwoman. It was different from Crom...and a good place to send one of the Craft's few women.
Thus, Kimarra...and Tamarron...arrive at the Weyr, and a very different life from any they have known.
Personality:
Kimarra is all business, a lot of the time. As a female in a male dominated profession, she knows she has to prove herself. It hasn't been easy for her, but the good side is that she does what she sets out to do.
The bad side? Since losing her husband -and- finding out he was unfaithful, Kimarra has turned into a total workaholic. She doesn't exactly neglect her son, but might work late, leaving him with the crecheworkers. She has few friends, and arrived at Ista with little understanding of Weyr ways. She thinks, with time, she'll come to like it.
She is also a bit of a sophisticate...and very definitely a wine snob. She'll even criticize people for cooking with bad wine (if you wouldn't drink it, don't cook with it). She tends to respect skill rather than rank...she has no patience for people she feels haven't earned their position, and thus has some problems with the hierarchy of the Weyr.
Although she likes the dragons, her sensitivity to them is relatively low, and she knows she could never Impress one. They -are- lovely, though, and she may be caught in an odd moment just watching them fly.
