Name: H'zu
Gender: Male
Age: 20 Turns
Season: Spring
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Rank: Bronzerider
Hair: Brown
Eyes: Brown
Height: 6'4
Weight: 186 lbs
Description:
Standing tall at six foot four inches, H'zu has a commanding presence. His light brown eyes seem to constantly give off the impression that he's deeply contemplating something. However, they're often obscured by his long, wavy brown bangs. His hair is cut long only on the front of his head so that his hair over shadows his face while the rest of it is cut quite sort to his head in what Terrans would call a "buzz cut." H'zu's face is quite round, though his chin is hard and firm, giving him the everlasting look of a handsome, boyish youth. The dragonrider has only the slightest of tans on what would normally be a milk white complexion with the only marring of his smooth skin the freckles that trail a path spanning the length of his cheeks.
The man is muscled, although not outrageously so. His muscles must be strong enough so that he can perform is duties as a dragonrider and former Wingthird at Benden Weyr. Despite the plague and the constant tending of his dragon, H'zu has only lost a small fraction of his muscle mass due to a decrease in his diet. When he nearly lost his beast, he too had almost succumb to death.
As a rider, he has learned the value of comfortable clothes over attire that is more stylish. Indeed, he normally wear anything made of thick, comfortable wherhide. While he prefers that it's been tanned to blue or green hues, he'll take any scrap of good leather clothing he can find. H'zu's status as a dragonrider comes before anything else and as he's constantly a-dragonback, the man is rarely ever seen out of his riding gear. Of course, he'll ditch the thick jacket and breeches for a thinner jerkin, but for the most part, he's rider equipped at all times. Hanging from his belt is a small pouch presumably filled with marks and just next to it is a rather plain belt knife for 'just in case' occasions.
History:
H'zu, born Herazu, lived at Benden Hold for most of his childhood. His parents were brewers, trained specifically to make the famous, or infamous, Benden wine that so many on Pern covet. They had very traditional views of child rearing and sent him off to be fostered at two different Holds, both half way across Pern from each other. He was taken in at the cretch at Half Circle SeaHold and spent six years of his life in the harsh upbringing of a seaman. He was deemed to have 'luck' when it came to fishing and was typically sent out with other lads his age to the vast piers and beaches of Half Circle to catch whatever he could. And the lad enjoyed fishing with it's quietness and peacefulness. Even the competiton amongst the male children was easy going and steady. The boy learned to gut fish, prepare them, and discovered the best methods to catch fish properly.
He would have loved to stay at Half Circle, where he was treated like royalty because of his sex. Girls at the Hold were still treated almost as second class citizens and no women, he saw, could work in any sort of Craft aside from, perhaps, cooking. Ninety percent of the women he came into contact with were mothers, wet nurses, or cretchwomen. His parents, of course, knew that Half Circle was still 'old-fashioned' in that respect and, before H'zu could make the bias his own, he was sent off again, this time to Fort Hold.
Being attached to the Hold that was also connected to the Harper Hall, H'zu was able to, in a way, expand his horizons. At Fort women pursed almost whatever they pleased and many a time he saw journeywomen walking around the halls of the Hold. H'zu learned from his six year stay at Fort about equity and fairness. Although it was a culture shock for him to see women with power, he accepted the concept rather readily, his age allowing him that.
He was so close to harpering at Fort that he couldn't help pick up music himself. One of the harpers at Fort made an effort with the boy, testing his skills, trying to see if the boy had the talent to be tapped as an apprentice. He did not, however, only being able to play the pipes somewhat decently. Try as he might, H'zu just didn't have the aptitude for music like the rest of those who resided in the Harper Hall did.
His stay at Fort Hold ended when he was roughly twelve Turns. His parents had him sent back to Benden Hold a-dragon back. H'zu was elated as it was the first time aboard one of the legendary protectors of Pern. Ford Hold had embedded it into his mind that dragonriders were the most respected people on the face of Pern and they should be treated with reverence and respect, so to finally sit on the neck of a green was something of a dream for him.
Alas, the flight /between/ was short and the young man was dumped off with his parents, the thrill of the flight lingered in his mind for Turns. All the while, the young man was being trained to become a brewer like his parents. There, at least, he seemed to have some kind of talent. He would eventually, his parents hoped, would make a decent Craftsman. They didn't count on their son getting Searched by a Benden blue.
The dragonman had came bringing whispers of a disease, a sickness spreading amongst firelizards. He couldn't go into much details, but said sadly, that his own flitter had become very sick and had luckily recovered. H'zu was to Stand for a Clutch the Senior Queen of Benden had laid. The bluerider was a little late in coming to Benden as, he told H'zu and his parents, the Touching and subsequent Hatching would be underway within the next couple of days.
H'zu and his family were thrilled that the young man had been Searched. No one in his immediate family had ever become a dragonrider and his mother could only vaguely remember her own mother telling what she thought were made up stories about her sister going off and becoming a queenrider. Either way, it was a happy time for them and they sent him off with the Benden rider.
As it so happened, H'zu Stood for the last Benden Clutch ever to Hatch since before or after the Plague. His bronze Erusth was one of the very last out of his shell. To H'zu, it didn't appear as though the bronze even wanted him either, as the draognet passed him by, heading straight for the feeding area outside the Hatching Grounds. Before he got there, he turned his head, eyes whirling happily and touched H'zu's mind.
H'zuMine, why aren't you following me? I'm hungry and -you- need to feed me!
And H'zu had and did and will do for the rest of his life. Sadly, the boy nearly lost his beloved Erusth during the climax of the Plague. He had been hoping that his young, sturdy bronze would be spared the rampage of the sickness, but one day he began coughing...
The sickness progressed until it's symptoms progressed through H'zu as well. The pair quit eating, became solitary, and H'zu realized that the both were on the brink of demise. Then! A miraculous ray of hope! A healer had burst into their weyr (all sick Weyrlings had been seperated from the rest of the healthy dragons in an effort to stem the spread of the sickness within the Weyr) with a syringe. H'zu had not even the energy to get up and greet the woman as she injected the medicine into Erusth's thick hide.
Then, the waiting began and Erusth showed no signs of getting better at all for almost two days but finally, finally the symptoms began to ease, the bronze's coughing fits slowed and then ceased. After almost a (insert a length of time here), Erusth was able to start eating red meat, able to start moving around again. The bronze's growth up until that point had been stinted by his lack of movement, dystrophy and physical weakness. But he was better! Soon, the young dragon's strength returned to him and his growth hormones rocketed back into production. He was getting larger and larger, stronger and stronger, as was his weakened rider.
Finally, along with most of the vaccinated dragons, Erusth was back up to full health and finishing his Weyrlinghood. Unfortunately, not many of the dragons from his Erusth's Clutch survived. Those that did were transferred away. To H'zu's knowledge, he was the only surviving bronzerider of that last Benden Hatching....
He wasn't needed at the dying Weyr any longer, it seemed. When the junior-most, and only surviving, gold dragon Rose almost a Turn after Erusth became fully grown, she laid not a single Egg on the Sand. With no other viable gold dragons at the Weyr, it seemed as though Benden...Benden would be no more. Distraught and looking for hope, H'zu caught wind of the Hatching of a gold dragonet at Ista Weyr. Would she be infertile? Could she possibly hold the key to Pern's rebirth? H'zu did not know, but he wanted to find out for himself.
Recieving permission from the defeated Weyrwoman of Benden, H'zu and his bronze Erusth went /between/, reappearing over Ista Weyr's Star Stones.
Personality:
H'zu is a quick learner and a patient teacher. The man is quick to laugh and slow to anger, a good trait for a bronzerider. Rarely does the man speak without thinking and only then will he do so if his speech will not rise anger or fear in to whomever he's speaking to. Of course, if need be, he can do the exact opposite and he knows very well how to manipulate people with words. While he leaves cunning up to his dragon, the rider does know how to read people's expressions and body language, effectively able to interpret subtle movements and changes in tone.
While he's an excellent conversationalist and does tend to have rather in depth chats, H'zu is not a people person. He prefers to stick to a small group of close knit friends or remain alone. When he's doing his duties he doesn't like to be bothered at all with idle chit-chat or with things that are irrelevant to what he's doing. No, H'zu is definitely an all work, no play type of fellow. That's not to say he doesn't enjoy Gathers or evening leasure, but he is a very strict by the books character when it comes to working. He believes in heirarchy and the traditions of the Weyr. Without them, he believes that Pern would have been lost to human and dragonkind centuries ago. He's extremely traditionalist up to the point where women are concerned.
H'zu believes that all females could, if need be, sucessfully become fighting dragonriders. He's seen enough strong women in his day to know that they can do far more than sit inside a Weyr, tending to a Clutch heavy gold. No, from his time spent at Fort Hold, this bronzerider has come to see women as equals, not subservient creatures.

Dragon name: Erusth
Dragon color: Bronze
Dragon age: 2 Turn
Hatching season: Fall
Dragon description:
Erusth is a large bronze, reaching just over forty-three meters long. What he has in size, he lacks in general bulk. Sure, he's got the muscle mass to be a bronze, he just doesn't have as much endurance as one who is roughly around the same size as he is. His rider H'zu attributes this litheness of body to the time in his Weyrlinghood that he was stricken with the Plague. His long and lean body makes him surprisingly agile for his great size in the air, however, and he seems to have an unusually wide wingspan, making him an excellent gilder and over all flyer.
His hide is a deep copper color with an almost emerald sheen to it. If any dragon could be deemed 'metallic', it would be Erusth. He seems to shine at all hours of the day and night and has a very smooth and glossy hide to him, even without H'zu constantly oiling him. The bronze's hide makes him even faster in the air than some of his counterparts simply because the air he's flying through can more easily flow across his shining hide. Throughout his body, the dragon has several 'streaks' of molten copper running across the length of his body. One runs from the tip of his nose to the very tips of his tail, one on his right flank, the other on his left. Here and there on his wings, too, are streaks of the liquid metal color.
Dragon personality:
Erusth is a sharp and cunning bronze with a surprising amount of insight. He enjoys conversations much more than other dragons and he will often make any kind of excuses he can to be rid of his rider and speak to his fellow dragons. Of course, he's not very interested in chatting up blues or greens. No, they're not good enough for the likes of his company, although he treats the 'lower' dragons with respect when he as to deal with them.
In fact, the dragon does try to be fair when it comes to blues and greens and will give them the time of day, if absolutely necessary. If not, he prefers to chat idly with browns and other bronzes. Were there more golds inhabiting Pern, he would, naturally, do his best to get on their good sides. Indeed one thing he likes about relocating to Ista Weyr is the fact that he'll be around a young juicy looking young gold who is supposedly rumored to Rise soon...
He is steadfast and loyal to his rider and does everything he can to help his rider succeed in his endevours, although if need be he will choose a gold over His any day. Still, the two have a powerful bond not unique to themselves, and understand each other perfectly.
