As far as Mandra's family was concerned, the best part of a gold flight was the perfectly good carcasses left lying in the field. Once the beasts had calmed down, a few of them got in there to finish gutting the beasts so they wouldn't spoil before they could get carted out. This time, she was one of the people close enough to do the rough butchering.
For Mandra, though she loved steak as much as her brothers, a flight was also the start of a countdown until she would once again stand and hope she was acceptable to some green hatchling. The past two years had been different, the flights had only meant more meat then usual for a few meals.
This time though, she wasn't sure she would do justice to the meal tonight. Her stomach was churning with relief that the young queen had flown and worry that there would still be no eggs. Not only would that end her hopes, but it might end Pern!
Carefully she continued cutting her little blue bits of the herd beasts organs, feeding him until his belly bulged and he was collapsed on her arm. If there were no eggs, would the flitts have to protect everyone? He was a brave little guy, but so little!
