Yselka came down the stairs from her Weyr even as Lyeth launched a little awkwardly from her ledge, gliding towards the lake slowly.
A close inspection of the golden queen would reveal the reason for her slight difficulty getting into the air...the slight lumps visible along her flanks said it all.
"Thank Faranth," Yselka muttered. She had not been sure until that morning, but Lyeth was, very definitely and obviously...pregnant.
There would be eggs, there would be a clutch, and even if she would have to match Ramoth to really catch up, with coordination between the Weyrs, they could do it. It was, perhaps, no surprise that the young Weyrwoman started...whistling. Cheerfully.
Pretty soon, Lyeth would rid herself of her burden, would place those eggs on the Sands to harden. She had to tell the Searchriders...and the other Weyrs...that there would be a clutch.
Yet, at the back of her mind, was one worry. Those deformed firelizards...and the plague had, if anything, affected dragons worse...

H'zu had been roused rather roughly by his bronze's excited stirring in his mind. Bonooru's excitement, too, was resonating inside of him, bringing him into the world of the conscious. A brief look about his surrounding told him that Yselka had already gotten up and so too had Lyeth. How rude! He had at least kind of excepted a gentle prod from the woman whom he'd been calling his weyrmate for several sevendays. Ah, well.
H'zu, finally you rise! You must see Lyeth! You must see Yselka! The bronze exclaimed triumphently in his rider's mind.
Why? I see them every day... H'zu replied, getting out of bed nonetheless and dressing himself.
But the bronze, startlingly, gave no response and, when H'zu turned his attention to his faithful bronzie-blue, he received nothing more than an oddly fuzzy picture of Lyeth and near the lake. Well, he supposed that was where he obviously needed to be.
And so the bronzerider went, down the steps from the weyr he shared with Yselka all the way to the lake where the gold pair were.
"Oy, Yselka! Erusth was..." H'zu cut off, seeing the girth of his bronze beast already in the water. "What's going on?"

Yselka turned and smiled. "Sorry, I would have woken you, but Lyeth was very cranky and I didn't want to inflict her on anyeone."
Lyeth settled her bulk into the water near her mate with an audible sigh.
"As for what's going on...I can most definitely inform you that Lyeth is *definitely* egg heavy." They were saved...at least for now.
All she could do now was hope for a huge clutch. She feared that Lyeth's instincts would keep the clutch size down, sensing the other golds, fertile or not. "Take a look."
The gold...blew bubbles at Erusth, not taking any of this seriously at all. Rebel flitted around her, then settled on Yselka's shoulder, bronze tail around her neck.

H'zu could understand that; he personally wouldn't have wanted to be around Lyeth if she was in a bad mood. For that matter, he didn't even like being around his normally nonchallant steadfast bronze when he got worked up. Yes, knowing that Yselka had saved him the trouble of having to look out for an unhappy gold was quite nice of her.
"It's no problem, really. Just noticed you were up. Erusth and Bonooru rushed me down here," He said with a grin, running a hand over his closely cropped hair.
Lyeth's closeness to Erusth prompted the bronze's human mate to stride between the gap between himself and Yselka, smiling fondly at her. He opened his mouth to say something else he hoped would be charming when the words were caught with a gasp in his throat.
"E-egg heavy?! Is she truly?" The exclamation drew him momentarily away from the gold rider and closer to the lake, trying to peer beneath the water's surface to see for himself. Just faintly, he could make out that she was indeed bulging.
"Yselka, she's going to Clutch!"
In his excitement, he reached for the woman, to draw her into his arms, to hold her, squeeze her, spin her around til they were both dizzy. Erusth had done it! Lyeth had done it! Pern had hope! Pern, the dragons, would prevail!

Yselka eeped as her weyrmate suddenly started acting like an adolescent in love. "Hey! I didn't do it...Lyeth did!"
Of course, the way they were going, she wouldn't be too surprised if she ended up pregnant herself.
"We won't know how many until she drops them, of course." And she prayed to Faranth for no duds. No duds. They couldn't afford any duds. She didn't voice that or her other concerns, she let H'zu enjoy the moment.
"So, how smug is Erusth right now."
Very. One would think he was the one who had to lay the eggs.
Fathers are like that, I'm told.
He had better help.
Yselka couldn't see Erusth not helping with his eggs. He struck her as quite the sensible dragon...and utterly intimidated by his mate.
