Gold
Golds are called queens for a reason. The largest of all dragons, they are the natural matriarchs. Their color ranges from cream to deep yellow with a brilliant metallic sheen.
Golds are strong willed and often difficult to handle. Not all goldriders successfully do so, but those who do are the most powerful individuals on Pern. All other dragons will obey a gold.
Golds Impress only to women and most of those women are heterosexual. They choose strong women, ones with willpower and powerful personalities.
Gold mating patterns are affected by Thread and by the number of dragons already present. A gold may mate as often as every six months in the ten years before a Pass, as rarely as every two Turns in the middle of an Interval. She can lay anything up to fifty eggs, although clutches that large are very rare.
Some golds will remain loyal to one mate for their entire lives, and there have been records of golds ceasing to rise if a preferred mate pre-deceases them. Others choose a different male every flight.
Platinum
Platinums are easily as large as golds and obtain the same respect from the rest of the dragons. A platinum dragon is pure white, overlaid with a distinct metallic sheen.
Platinums are strong willed and often difficult to handle. They have many of the same challenges as golds, but tend to me a little more quirky in personality.

Bronze
The largest of the males, but still a little smaller than golds. It is most often a bronze who flies the gold. Bronzes are a rich, deep golden color, often with a strong greenish sheen (some bronzes look 'tarnished').
Bronzes are arrogant, they know they are the best and insist on making sure everyone around them does too. They are the fighting leaders, and even the golds will defer to the weyrleader's bronze during Fall itself...but only the.
Bronzes Impress only to men, and almost always to heterosexual men. They choose leaders, they choose people who would be considered 'officer' material...bronzeriders are assumed to have the potential to lead wings and even Weyrs.
Bronzes seldom mate with greens.
Brown
Browns are the workhorses of the wings. Of medium size, a larger brown can occasionally mate with a gold, although it's considered less than desirable. Gold-brown matings tend to produce smaller clutches and fewer bronzes and browns. Browns range from light tan all the way to almost black.
Browns Impress to men, preferring heterosexuals or bisexuals with more masculine personalities. They choose stoic, solid types, and 'brownrider' is practically a euphemism for a reliable person.
Browns seldom mate with golds, but fairly regularly with greens.
Blue
The blues are the smallest males, overlapping in size with the greens. Blues can range from so pale as to be almost grey all the way to deep, rich midnight. Blues make the best Search dragons, having a knack for assessing human sensitivity. Blues are also somewhat more likely to seek affection from humans other than their rider, and may even speak to them, especially potential Candidates.
Blues Impress to men, preferring bisexuals or homosexuals with more masculine personalities. Blueriders are the quiet types, often shy, sometimes prudish, and never putting themselves forward.
Blues never mate with golds, but are often the preferred mates of greens.
Turquoises
They have blue and green of any shade in a pattern across their hide. Commonly, this forms mottles and swirls, such that the dragon may appear more one color or more the other from different angles. Occasionally, a turquoise may have a large patch of green or blue.
Turquoises are neither male nor female. A very close examination will reveal that their genitals are a distorted fusion of male and female traits. They neither Rise nor Chase and do not miss the fact. They tend to make excellent Search dragons.
Turquoises can Impress to anyone, of any gender or sexuality. Because of the nature of the Impression bond, a turquoise's 'social gender' shifts to match that of its rider...a turquoise who Impresses to somebody of uncertain or shifting gender themselves will take on that trait.
Greens
Greens are the smallest of dragons, and are female. They range from light spring green to the deep color of pine woods. Greens are infertile, but rise to mate often...as often, in fact, as they feel like, and 'green dragon' is often used to mean 'flirt'.
Greens Impress to both men and women. Female greenriders can be of any sexuality. Male greenriders are generally bisexual or homosexual with feminine personalities (a 'male greenrider' is the Pernese 'flaming queen'). Greenriders are reckless, they are the fancy flyers and fighter jocks of the Pernese airforce. They also tend to be somewhat flirtatious.
