Description: Tarana has an average height for a woman, and a healthy build. Despite three childbirths, she has remained fit because of all the work she does running around the lower caverns. She has dark brown, almost black hair and wide, light brown eyes. Her skin is deeply tanned, and there are faint laugh lines around her eyes and mouth. She wears practical clothing, and only dresses up for a special occasion. She is most often seen wearing her trusty old apron, which has dragons embroidered on it and lots of pockets where she keeps surprises and candy for children.
History: Tarana was born in Keroon Hold to a family of runnerbeast breeders. She was a middle child and the youngest daughter of the family. She had a fairly happy childhood and the typical upbringing for a girl. When she was older, she earned her keep as a cook. In her late teens, she met Desine, a Weaver journeyman. Desine was charming and attractive, and she fell for him easily. After about six months, they were married.
The marriage turned out to be a destructive relationship. Desine was very controlling and eventually became physically abusive. However, Tarana did not know how to leave the situation, especially when she became pregnant. When she was 23, she had her first child, a boy who she named Tesin. Tesin was a bright spot in a life that was quickly losing its joy under Desine's power.
After about five turns of this abusive marriage, she finally found the courage to run away. With her four turn old child, she fled to the Weyr, hoping to find sanctuary with the dragonriders. They accepted her, and she found a place in the lower caverns. She had help raising her son Tesin from the creche workers. Tarana loved the Weyr, and found the perfect niche as a cook. For her first few turns, she was very quiet and shy as a result of the abuse she had underwent during her marriage, but eventually she came out of her shell.
Four turns after her arrival at the Weyr, she attended one of the Weyr's many Turns End parties with her friend, a brown rider named N'luk. The evening ended in bed, and a few sevendays later she found out she was pregnant. Tarana decided to carry the pregnancy to term. Nine months later her second child, another boy, was born. She named him Rannul.
The turns passed peacefully. Tarana rose in rank to Assistant Head Cook, and was being groomed to take over with the current Head Cook retired. Three turns after Rannul's birth, a tryst with a visiting Harper resulted in the birth of her third and youngest son, Wynec. Despite a few romances, Tarana never committed to a marriage again, perhaps afraid of the relationship turning abusive once more.
At the age of thirty-six, she was promoted to Head Cook. A few turns later, the Headwoman passed away, and Tarana was chosen as the replacement. Despite the high rank, she never acted arrogant, regarding the post as simply a steady job. Her children were growing quickly into young men and developing their own unique paths in life. The sweet, empathetic Tesin might have made a good dragon rider, but he saw dolphins one day and everything changed. Tesin left the Weyr a few turns ago to become a dolphineer, and Tarana missed him a lot at first, but she still had her two other sons.
When a clutch with a Gold egg was laid, Tarana waited as anxiously as anyone else for the Hatching. Rannul, her shy son, was candidate age and stood for the clutch. She expected a noble bronze or dependable brown for him, but instead, a cheerful little green chose him. Despite the surprise, she was proud of her son's Impression. She was relieved when the Gold Impressed, and immediately took the young Gold weyrling under her wing.
Personality: Tarana is a mother to the entire Weyr, not just her own three sons. She is very pragmatic in her treatment of people, and can sense whether someone needs a kind word or a good stern lecture. The same hand that smacks a naughty weyrbrat will comfort a homesick candidate just minutes later. She is strong and self-reliant, and most would never guess she had been abused all those years ago.
She is practical, and good to rely on in a crisis. Tarana gives good advice because she almost always manages to remain impartial. Plus, she is extremely trustworthy and will never spill a secret told to her. She detests gossip, and tries to put a stop to it in her lower caverns.
