Name: Mandra
Gender: female
Age: 18
Season: winter
Sexuality: - Hetero,
Rank: candidate,
Hair: sun streaked brown, hanging to the middle of her back almost always in a braid
Eyes: brown, a milk chocolate shade
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 180
Description: Taller then almost any other woman she has ever met, Mandra is from a tall and muscled family that has tended the herdbeasts at the Weyr for generations. She is not slender, nothing about her can be called delicate. Far from it, her shoulders are the width of most men’s and she can’t wear a bracelet made for a normal woman’s wrist. She has to have shirts made for her too, they have to be long enough to fit over breasts and still tuck into her pants. Men’s pants work well, being long enough.
She is well muscled too. It is rounded muscle; she is not without fat, the fat just rounds out the hard edges of the muscles beneath. Anyone who sees her move or work knows that the muscle works very well indeed.
Her face is almost square, with a wide strong chin and a wide forehead. A strong face and a face in proportion to itself, it fits her size nicely. Seen at a distance, you don’t realize how big she is. She is deeply tanned, a tan with a reddish tone to it, like the American Indians have.
She stands more like a man would then a woman, having spent her life working with herdbeasts and brothers; she learned to have a commanding presence before she realized how threatening that made her appear to some men. She isn’t interested in changing it, any man she scares away obviously isn’t worth the effort, and certainly could not deal with her family!
History:
All Weyrs need people to look after the herdbeasts and wherries the dragons feed on. It is a lot of work and takes many people, what with the feeding them, caring for them and insuring a steady supply of new healthy beasts keep going into the feeding pens. Mandra's large and sprawling family is one of the families involved in thism and has been for generations. Occasionally a family member is searched, usually picked be a green or blue dragon. They are proud of this, of course.
Mandra was one of 7 children, the other 6 are sons. She never had much contact with 'girly' girls, running around with her brothers and their friends and loving every minute of it.
She had the chance to become a beastcrafter apprentice, but her love is for healthy animals and animal(and human) behavior, not looking after sick animals.
She was searched when she was 12, and has attended every hatching for 5 years, refusing to give up. She'll stand until they refuse to let her on the hatching grounds any more.
Between hatchings she goes back to helping with the never ending work of providing healthy live food for the Weyr's dragons, not talking about the stubborn refusal to give up. Her family breeds for stubborn, her father boasts, quietly proud of his very unconventional daughter.
Personality:
Honest to the point of insulting those who do not understand honesty. If you ask her what she thinks, she will tell you. Be ready! Ruthlessly pragmatic, she doesn’t waste time on what ‘should’ work. She wants to know what will work, and if necessary will experiment or study until she makes it work.
A shrewd judge of animal and human nature learned through working with animals all her life and having many siblings, Jandra has perfected a pleasant rather bland smile that fools many people. Who would expect a woman so big and strong to have much intelligence? The smart women are the small fierce ones, right? That seems to be what most people think, a fact greatly to her advantage.
The amount she has learned from foolish Weyrfolk who believe that size has an inverse relationship to intelligence is amazing. She helps keep the dragon feeding pens stocked and the conversations flow around her. What she doesn’t hear, one of her brothers will. They make it their business to know as much as possible of the Weyr business.
She is mostly resigned to being a very unfeminine looking woman. There are advantages, the male sleazes don’t mess with her and she can have real conversations with men without the posturing and flirting most women have to put up with, but sometimes, especially when yet another female rider makes a pass at her, she wishes she was just a little less strong looking. It would save her from having to politely say ‘no thanks’ again. Then to make herself feel better she will listen to male riders discussing their girlfriends and decide she really isn’t missing much from not having the men after her.
Pets: she looks after and feeds the felines who keep the herdbeast feed vermin free, She admires them, there is no nonsense about a feline. Gorgeous strong independent creatures, aren’t they?
