The best time to add new beasts to the fields the dragons hunted from was late evening. The dragons were done hunting, their riders were off having dinner and the herd beasts were tired and less likely to panic.
Mandra kept her runner at a slow walk, staying to the left of the herd. It looked like the cleaning crew had already gone through and gotten all the inevitable bits left from the dragons' meals, making this a fairly easy chore. On some days, especially if a dragon had risen and bloodied some beasts, it could be a real chore to get the herd inside the feeding field.
Unfortunately it left her free to think, and her thoughts turned to the Weyr and the Weyrling Queen. She was due to rise any day now, but would she clutch? Dragon kind depended on her doing so, which left Mandra feeling a little guilty that she selfishly wanted eggs laid so she could stand again.
Every search rider told her she was suitable, she had met them all at one time or another. Every search dragon liked her, shard it all, surely that meant someday a dragon would choose her - if any more eggs were ever laid.
Soon the herd was in, leaving her with some frustrated energy to burn off. She'd stop by the Candidate's barracks and see who was new there. It would give her a break from her family and their gossip too. Sometimes her family was too much company. A group of Candidates she didn't know and who didn't know her would be a nice break.
